PROCESSING OF NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC DIAMOND DIES: Only good die tools draw good wire! (PDF) Reconditioning dies on a regular basis is essential to the production of consistently high quality wire. It enables longer uninterrupted wire drawing processes, improved performances and higher tonnages of wire. EDER Engineering-Austria offer an easy to use spectrum of advanced equipment, ready to solve all existing problems in drawing dies fast, efficiently and with minimum human personnel intervention required. In contrast to tungsten carbide dies, dies made from natural or synthetic diamond are much more difficult and complex to work. Natural diamond has significant variations in its hardness and other properties that make its workability very much dependent on the individual stone. With PCD, this complexity is often even greater with granulation, cobalt content, thermal stability, electrical conductivity and size all subject to variation. In practice, successful diamond/PCD die working normally requires a variety of processing technologies applied by a combination of machinery. Working the die reduction cones (re-profiling, enlargements, polishing) is almost always performed ultrasonically with machinery such as Eder Engineering's advanced USP range. All USP machines feature the very latest super-efficient, solid state, fully transistorised ultrasonic generators with fully automatic tuning and constant amplitude control, as well as a highly efficient PCZ-Ultrasonic converter with a titanum horn and threaded workneedle connection for easy exchange of worn-out pins. |

Working the die bearings is usually performed with wire-type sizing/polishing machinery such as Eder Engineering's HGM, CGM, or UFW ranges. The die material (ND/PCD), die bore size and the die throughput required determine the choice of model. |
